Numerous fact-finding discussions with emergency doctors, intensive care specialists and interventional cardiologists across Europe in the early 2000s established a desire for independent, outcome-oriented research.
This call for independent research arose for two main reasons:
- Medical research today is narrowly defined in order to comply with tight measurement rules and to obtain regulatory approval, which means that the focus is no longer on best patient outcomes.
- Recent trends in all major European healthhcare systems ask for more outcome-based approaches. Unlike the current system, reimbursement will be increasingly related to results rather than to activities.
