Access to primary angioplasty: overcoming barriers, addressing inequalities from ECCF on Vimeo.

In January 2013, ECCF, in alliance with Stent for Life Initiative held a roundtable event for policymakers in Brussels to raise awareness of the wide variations in access across Europe to this scientifically proven best practice and chart a way forward to address this.

MEP Mrs Antigoni Papadopoulou hosted this event, which was well attended by a number of key individuals from the Parliament and Commission as well as from the wider Brussels health policy community.

  • Supported by Mrs Papadopoulou, many panellists agreed to support a future initiative to draft a written declaration on access to p-PCI.

Following the success of the roundtable, the European Commission invited ECCF and Stent for Life Initiative to share their expertise with the Committee on the Cross-border Healthcare Directive, made up of appointed Member States’ experts. Representing the two organisations respectively were Prof. John Martin, Chairman of ECCF and Dr William Wijns, Stent for Life Initiative Co-Founder who gave a joint presentation on access to primary angioplasty in cross-border settings at a Committee meeting on 3 June 2013.

  • They urged the Commission and the Member Countries to establish agreements to minimise delays for patients of border zones with potentially more rapid access to 24/7 primary angioplasty hospitals even if this requires ambulances to cross national borders.
